※ Pathogen & Disease Overview
In humans, Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), a viral hemorrhagic fever, is caused by four (out of six) viruses in the Ebolavirus genus. These four pathogenic species include Ebola virus (Zaire ebolavirus), Sudan virus (Sudan ebolavirus), Taï Forest virus (Taï Forest ebolavirus), and Bundibugyo virus (Bundibugyo ebolavirus). You may have heard of the Reston virus from Richard Preston’s book, The Hot Zone, but there have been no confirmed human infections. Like Marburg virus, Ebolaviruses are members of the Filoviridae family and encode their genetic material as single-stranded, negative-sense RNA.
